Заместник-първият министър на британската провинция Северна Ирландия Мартин Макгинес призова Великобритания да поеме ангажимент да организира референдум за обединяване на Ирландия, ако излезе от Европейския съюз, предаде Ройтерс, цитирана от БТА и Дир.
Т. нар. Брекзит ще промени ситуацията в политически и икономически план „за остров Ирландия“, каза Макгинес.
Неговата партия „Шин фейн“ („Ние самите“), чиято електорална база са ирландските католици националисти, се обявява за обединение на Зеления остров.
За предстоящия през юни референдум във Великобритания за членството в Европейския съюз, „Шин фейн“ води кампания за това тази страна да остане в ЕС.
Протестантите, които са пробритански настроени, все още са мнозинство от населението на Северна Ирландия.
Проучване от ноември на Би Би Си и ирландската обществена радиотелевизионна компания показа, че само 30 процента от избирателите в тази британска провинция искат да видят обединена Ирландия през своя живот.
